Maryann

CEO

Qualifications:
Person Centred Counsellor Safeguarding Level 4, currently studying a degree in Chartered Management.

In 2016, I founded Spiral alongside three dedicated trustees, driven by a deeply personal mission. This personal mission revealed the need for a space for people to access that removed the isolation of bullying, the stress parents feel, and a safe place to work with those showing bullying behaviour.

Alan

William Alan Brown OBE

Chair of Trustees

The work Spiral carries out with young people and families suffering the effects of bullying, made me want to use my skills and experience to help break this cycle of behaviour.

Alan spent 40 years working in the Criminal Justice System, including senior leadership roles as Deputy Governor and Governor.

In retirement, he has volunteered with the Teachers Regulation Agency, Cumbria Council, and Westmorland and Furness Council, chairing disciplinary and school appeal panels. He has also served as a school governor in Carlisle.

Alan was awarded an OBE in 2008 for services to the Prison Service and prisoners. He enjoys the gym, walking, holidays, and supporting charitable work.

Kim

Trustee

What inspired me to become a trustee for Spiral is the the opportunity to support children and families at the beginning of their story and to effect positive outcomes.

I have been a Probation Officer for several decades working with adults in the criminal justice system. Each person has their own story often linked to childhood trauma and experiences.

Anna

Trustee
Hi everyone, I’m Anna. I am really passionate about the work Spiral is doing to improve access to services for young people in Cumbria, especially given the challenges the county faces with regards to health and wellbeing services.

I currently work in the NHS in the health psychology department and have a real passion for clinical psychology work.

Trustee

I believe every young person deserves to feel safe, seen, heard and supported. Bullying steals confidence and joy—but the right support can help restore it.

After having worked in the finance sector in the City Of London, and having achieved a degree in Business Management, I changed careers and trained in Youth and community work.

I have experience of working in the voluntary sector in managing a local charity and as a Senior advocate for the National Youth Advocacy Service. I was employed by the Local Authority as a children’s services manager supporting vulnerable children and families.

I have experience and qualifications in delivering training in behaviour management techniques and creative therapies

Margaret O'Brien

Margaret O'Brien

Secretary

I have over 35 years' experience of working in the criminal justice system predominantly as a probation officer devoting much of this time to building expertise in assessment and intervention within the field of sexual offending.

In addition, I devised and delivered a wide range of training to an equally wide range of agencies, volunteers and university students.

I am now fully retired from paid work and my last position of employment was with a charity called Change, Grow, Live who were working towards the principal of ‘no more victims’ aiming to encourage the reintegration of sexual offenders back into their communities and support them to live a productive and non-offending life.

Although specialising in all aspects of sexual offending for the better part of 30 years I have also worked fairly extensively within the field of domestic abuse.

I am involved in the work of Spiral because I have always worked in an area where I can offer support and assistance to those who want or need to make changes in their lives in order to improve their happiness and well-being. I think it is so important that this is also offered to children and young people who find this difficult to do. I want to support Spiral to continue to do this.

I love music, working on my allotment but most of all I love my dogs!
